NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Sen. Elizabeth said “I am not a person of color” after a voter confronted her about using a DNA test to prove her claim she has Native American ancestry.
"I am not a citizen of a tribe. Tribal citizenship is very different from ancestry. Tribes -- and only tribes -- determine tribal citizenship, and I respect that difference,” she said while campaigning in Sioux City, according to CNN.
The questioner was concerned President Trump might use the issue to fuel his attacks against her.
“I can't stop him from hurling racial insults. I don't have any power to do that,” Warren said.
It was the first question she received in her first full day on the campaign trail in Iowa, according to CNN.
Warren, one of President Trump’s fiercest Democratic critics, has been getting her 2020 campaign underway.
She closed out day two of her trip across Iowa on Saturday. It was her first trip since announcing she was looking into running in 2020.
She roused a big crowd, with supporters streaming outside the venue, despite a hoarse voice.
“The bad news is I’ve caught a cold,” she said. “The good news is, yeah, nevertheless I persist.”
Her fifth and last stop in the state Sunday is a roundtable with women leaders.
