NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The wife, child and mother-in-law of a Tampa Bay Rays minor leaguer were killed Tuesday in Virginia, allegedly by the player's brother-in-law, according to ESPN.
Matthew Thomas Bernard, 18, brother-in-law, of Blake Bivins, a Double-A pitcher, was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree homicide.
Police do not yet know the motive for the killings.
The suspect was arrested after a manhunt followed by a short foot chase, and was taken in naked, according to the report.
The Montgomery Biscuits, who Bivens played for, cancelled their Tuesday double-header.
Lou DiBella, the CEO and managing owner of the Biscuits, said in a statement, "Earlier today, we learned that one of our players, Blake Bivens, suffered unimaginable loss. First and foremost, the Biscuits thoughts and prayers are with Blake and all those who have been impacted by this tragedy."
The Rays said in a statement, "Earlier today we learned that Blake Bivens, a pitcher with our Double-A affiliate, the Montgomery Biscuits, suffered a terrible family tragedy in southern Virginia. Our hearts are broken for Blake."
Bivens, 24, was a fourth-round draft pick in 2014 from a Danville, Virginia high school and was in his first season as a relief pitcher, after being a starter since being drafted.
