Four-alarm fire burns through Jersey City homes

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A four-alarm fire tore through a row of homes in Jersey City Friday morning.

The fire began in a residence on Wade Street near Rutgers Avenue right before 4:30 a.m.

Firefighters are dealing with challenges such as high winds and hoarding in homes.

They figured out that the fires were being fed by a gas line, leading PSE&G to be brought in to turn off gas.

"We didn't want to put the fire out and then have a fire with a gas explosion. We had to wait until gas service came to shutdown the gas in the street," Steven McGill of the Jersey City Fire Department said. "Once they shut that down we were able to knock down the rest of the fire."

Two firefighters have suffered from smoke inhalation, but no other injuries have been recorded, according to authorities.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but investigators are saying it may be suspicious.
