NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A heat advisory is currently in effect in New York City, with the heat index expected to surpass 100.
Temperatures in the city are expected to reach 96 degrees on Monday as a heat wave passes through, but it will feel like it's at least 100 degrees, according to Accuweather. Heat advisories for the area are in effect through at least Tuesday night.
Both Monday afternoon and evening are expected to be hot and humid. Tuesday will feel the same, with a high of 93 degrees, but some thunderstorms expected in the afternoon and evening could bring rain and gusty winds.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday warned New Yorkers to "take proper safety precautions" amid the "potentially dangerous heat conditions."
"This type of heat is especially dangerous for young children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions — but I am encouraging everyone to limit outdoor activity, and if you're looking to stay cool at beaches and pools, please remember to wear your mask and practice social distancing," he said in a statement.
The state's beaches and pools will remain open, with restrictions, he noted. New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson also tweeted out a statement warning about the heat. Cooling centers are open across New York City, he said.
