NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man picked up a 7-year-old boy Thursday evening in Queens and threw him to the ground, causing serious injuries, according to police.
At about 4:48 p.m. in the vicinity of Metropolitan Ave. and Lefferts Blvd. in Kew Gardens, a shirtless 35-year-old man suddenly picked up a 7-year-old boy who was in his grandparents' driveway with his family and slammed him face-first into the pavement, police say.
The man, Laurance Gendreau, was arrested and charged with assault, acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17 years old and harassment.
Gendreau is homeless and was taken for a mental evaluation.
Police say he has a history of mental illness.
The child was brought to Cohen Children's Medical Center by EMS where is being treated for hemorrhaging to the brain and a contusion to the head, in critical but stable condition.
