NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Hundreds of people were detained this week in New York and New Jersey by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to officials.
There were at least 82 arrested in New York and 54 in New Jersey, primarily from Latin American countries including Guyana, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, El Salvador and Honduras.
New Jersey lawmakers will make an announcement Friday afternoon about the operation.
The state's policy is that it won't detain people for deportation unless they're charged or convicted of a serious crime.
Thomas Decker, an ICE field office director, said in a statement, "Of those arrested during these five days, more than half were released from local custody with an active detainer."
ICE officials said some of those arrested would face prosecution for illegal entry or illegal reentry, while others will be processed for removal from the country.
