
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea tells 1010 WINS the surge in gun violence across New York City is "all about math," as city officials call for an independent investigation of a possible work slowdown by NYPD officers.
"When you cut hundreds of millions of dollars from the budget, we have literally taken thousands of officers off of the street this summer," Shea said. "It's done at a time when we know violence is going to peak," he adds.
Shea said, "it's been busy summer," but there is no "slowdown", noting that the NYPD needs some help on policies and laws.
"I can tell you the detectives made arrests on 19 separate shootings or homicide incidents just last week."
There were at least four shootings early Monday morning and over a dozen people were injured in more than a dozen shootings that occurred over the weekend police said.
A 30-year-old man was shot on the left side of his stomach in Brooklyn just after midnight on Monday, police said.
A 33-year-old man was at 456 Dekalb Avenue in Bedford Stuyvesant at approximately 9:53 p.m. when he heard shots and then felt pain in his left ankle, police said.
He was taken to Brooklyn Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
An investigation is ongoing.
Just before 11 p.m. Sunday, a 39-year-old man was shot in the back in front of 89-18 85th. Street in Woodhaven, Queens.
EMS transported the victim to Jamaica.
Officials are searching for three unknown individuals and an investigation is ongoing.Police said a man walked into a Harlem hospital just after 11 p.m. Sunday night with. a gunshot wound in the leg, according to officials.
A suspect who was last seen fleeing on West 126th Street, officials said.
Early Sunday, a 65-year-old woman was shot twice in her leg while sitting on her porch in Brooklyn, police said.Officials said the victim was sitting in front of her home on Riverdale Avenue in Brownsville, just before 1:40 a.m., when she heard gunshots and felt pain in her leg.She was taken to Brookdale University Hospital and is expected to survive the attack.So far, no arrests have been made.
