NEW YORK (1010 WINS/AP) — U.S. Secretary of Labor Alex Acosta is resigning, President Donald Trump announced Friday morning.
The move comes amid controversy around how he managed a sex crime case involving billionaire businessman Jeffrey Epstein during his time as U.S. attorney for southern Florida.
Epstein is accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls.
President Donald Trump announced the decision outside the White House.
Trump said Acosta called him and that it was Acosta's decision to leave.
During Acosta's time as U.S. attorney in Miami, he oversaw a 2008 nonprosecution agreement with Epstein, which saw Epstein serve 13 months in jail and avoid federal charges.
New charge filed by federal prosecutors in New York against Epstein put his deal with Acosta under renewed scrutiny.
Epstein, 66, was charged with sex trafficking girls as young as 14.
Top Democratic lawmakers and presidential candidates had demanded that Acosta resign.
Trump had defended Acosta but said he'd look "very closely'' his handling of the 2008 agreement.
The deal came under scrutiny earlier this year following reporting by the Miami Herald.
