NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- It might be hard to tell if you ride the LIRR, but the railroad claims its trains are cleaned an average of 4.5 times a day.

Still, Newsday reports there are plenty of complaints about spilled beer and coffee on the floor and grime on seats and windows -- not to mention overflowing bathrooms.
"I've seen roaches. I mean, how do you get roaches on a moving train?" Tony Arroyo said.
Philip Eng made cleanliness a priority when he took over as President of the LIRR last April, but with a mandate to cut costs, budget documents indicate that so called enhanced cleaning of trains will be reduced going forward.
Riders remain skeptical.
"They don't seem any cleaner. ... Those that are commuting to work every day, I think, are getting fed up," said Steve Oleksiw.
He says commuters who leave their trash behind when they get off the train, aren't helping.
"Guys leave their beers around. And people push their garbage in between the seat and the wall, just below the window ... I've seen people blow their noses and push it in there. And I'm just like, 'Holy cow. How could you do that?'" he added.
As of now, a plan to position crews at stations throughout the system, to perform quick, midrun cleanups has been shelved, Newsday reports.
