Brooklyn man arrested for hit-and-run that killed 29-year-old woman: NYPD

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Brooklyn driver has been arrested and charged with leaving the scene after hitting and killing a 29-year-old woman in Chelsea on Sunday, the NYPD said.

Maria Christina Villacres, of Queens, was crossing 7th Avenue, at West 24th Street, around 5 a.m. on Sunday when 61-year-old Joseph Chery, of Crown Heights, allegedly hit her as he was driving south on 7th Avenue, police said.

Chery turned left onto West 23rd Street after he hit Villacres and kept driving, the NYPD said. Villacres was taken to Bellevue Hospital with head and body trauma, where she was pronounced dead, according to police.

Chery was arrested on Tuesday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, police said.

His attorney information wasn’t immediately available Wednesday.
