NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A pickup truck fatally struck a man in a wheelchair attempting to cross the street Monday night on Long Island, Suffolk County police said.
The crash occurred at 8:40 p.m., in North Patchogue while the 62-year-old man in the wheelchair crossed Waverly Avenue, about 200 feet south of Gateway Boulevard, authorities said.
The victim was hit by a 2003 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Santiago Diaz, 45, of Central Islip, officials said.
Diaz remained on scene of the crash.. Officials impounded the pickup a safety check.
He was taken to Long Island Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police have not released the identity of victim.
