NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — New Jersey Decmoratic Senator Bob Menendez is announcing the implementation of new restrictions on Amtrak's Portal Bridge.

The Portal Bridge is a more-than-century-old rail bridge that opens and closes to allow marine traffic to proceed on the Hackensack River.

I'm proud to announce that @USCG approved our request and it's now in effect, giving riders some peace of mind.As we work towards completing the #PortalBridge and #Gateway, this is a MAJOR step to ensure our commuters can get to work and home safely and without disruption.

— Senator Bob Menendez (@SenatorMenendez) March 15, 2019

The bridge sometimes gets stuck, which causes major disruption.

Five separate times the 108-year-old bridge failed to close properly last year.

The new restrictions will limit the time when the bridge can be open.

Menendez is the ranking member of the Senate's Transit Subcommittee.
