Monster water main break like 'volcanic eruption' in Brooklyn [VIDEO]

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A massive water main break sent water erupting from a Brooklyn sidewalk on Sunday morning and flooded surrounding streets.

The main broke around 5:30 a.m. near 44th Street and Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park, officials said.

The busted main caused the pavement sidewalk to collapse. Videos show water gushing from a 30-foot crater near Sunset Park and flowing down Fifth Avenue and surrounding side streets.

Bystanders compared the break to a "small geyser" or a "volcanic eruption."

No injuries have been reported, but there's no water pressure in surrounding areas. There's also concern about basement flooding.

The city has so far been unable to turn off the water and it continued to flood surrounding streets through the morning.

Police are redirecting traffic and drivers are advised to avoid the area.

Crews are working on the break, and the city says it hopes to have service returned by Sunday night.
