NJ university suspends 11 students from on-campus housing after weekend parties

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Montclair State University has suspended nearly a dozen students from on-campus housing for attending an off-campus party, as well as several maskless gatherings in dorm rooms, a university spokesperson said Tuesday.

The school learned that some students had attended "at least one off-campus party and some smaller gatherings in residence hall rooms" early Sunday morning, the spokesperson said in a statement provided to 1010 WINS.

Students at the small gatherings "were not observing social distancing and not wearing face coverings, as required by the institution's COVID-19 guidelines," according to the spokesperson.

Eleven students were suspended from on-campus housing soon after, the spokesperson said, noting that they were not suspended from the university itself.

The students have been required to quarantine for 14 days and will have to present medical evidence that they do not have COVID-19 before they can return to campus.

"The vast majority of our students are following the rules. We are disappointed that a small number chose to disregard these rules and by doing so, to create risk for our campus community," the spokesperson said in a statement.

"We are holding those students accountable for their actions. We have made extensive efforts to educate all of our students about what is expected of them, and we will continue to do so," the spokesperson added.
