Mourners gather to bid farewell to Marine, FDNY firefighter killed in Afghanistan

Christopher Slutman

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- There have been many tears shed this month for Christopher Slutman, the FDNY firefighter who was killed by a roadside bomb while serving with the Marine Corps in Afghanistan.

Some are hoping the healing can begin after Friday morning's funeral in Manhattan.

Slutman, 43, was a 15 year veteran of the FDNY and was also a lifelong member of the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department in Landover, MD. Colleagues remembered him as a constant learner.

"Chris was one of the most knowledgeable guys of the job that I ever worked with. But he always felt there was something to learn, some better way to do our jobs," said Dan Richter.

Slutman leaves behind a wife and three daughters. He was the fourth member of the FDNY to die in Iraq or Afghanistan since 2003.

The funeral procession will begin in the Bronx before making its way to St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manhattan.
