NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The MTA has released a first look at the new generation of subway cars, the R211 class. These trains will run on the subway's lettered routes and the Staten Island Railway.
The first of these test cars is scheduled for 2020. Some of these cars feature an "open gangway" design, which allows riders to move between cars while the train is in motion. They will also include wider doors, digital displays with real-time information and security cameras.
30 test cars are currently in production by Kawasaki Rail Car Inc, who have a $1.4 billion contract to produce 535 cars.
