NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The MTA board will vote Wednesday on a proposal that would amount to a fare hike for many riders.
Base fares for subway and bus riders would remain at $2.75 but the MetroCard bonus would be eliminated, making MetroCards more expensive for people who put multiple rides on their cards to get the bonuses, multiple reports say.
It's not clear what will happen to unlimited MetroCards, which currently cost $32 for a week and $121 for a month.
The move wouldn't affect Access-A-Ride users, who never had the bonuses and whose fare would stay at $2.75.
The MTA's financial problems have gotten so bad that the transit agency may scale back a plan to increase the number of elevators at major stations, according to NBC 4.
That sparked fury at an MTA committee meeting, with an advocate excoriating the committee. But NYC Transit President Andy Byford said he "isn't wavering" on his goal to make 50 stations accessible, NBC 4 reported.
