Curran said she expects the apex in about a week. "We are in the heat of battle right now and those numbers are going to rise over the coming days," she said.
There are 1,322 new cases in the county Saturday, bringing the total number of cases to 13,346.
Another 2,684 people were tested for the virus Friday, more than ever before, Curran said.
She said 11 more people had died from the virus in the county since Friday and that they ranged in age from 49 to 92. That brings the total number of deaths to 149.
The state has reported 396 deaths in the county. Curran said she and her team are working to verify those patients were all Nassau residents.
Coronavirus cases have been surging on Long Island in recent days.
At his daily news briefing Saturday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Nassau (13,346) had overtaken Westchester (13,081) in number of cases. There are 11,370 cases in Suffolk and at least 175 deaths.
"The rest of New York has been fairly constant, 4 percent or 5 percent," Cuomo said. "Long Island is the area that is growing."
"Watch Long Island, because it's like a fire, spreading," he said.
