NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced on Wednesday that the number of hospitalizations and positive coronavirus cases continue to decrease across the county.

As of Tuesday night, there are a total of 83,434 cases of the virus, an increase of 97 from the previous day, but announced that for the last eight days, there have been no new positive cases in the police or correction departments.

Curran reported that the county is close to the goal of two per 100,000 residents being admitted to area hospitals, but still needs to see a decline in the number of deaths.

They have checked five of the seven criteria set by the state for getting into Phase 1 of reopening, she said.

The number of deaths increased by 18, bringing the countywide total to 1,991.

According to health officials, this can be attributed to residents wearing proper protective equipment.

Curran urged that more testing needs to be done, especially for residents in areas with community clinics, where a higher number of positive cases have been reported.

"Testing is an important part of coming back strong, and coming back soon," she said.
