RUTHERFORD, N.J. (1010 WINS) – A 14-year-old boy attacked his school principal with a knife during a graduation practice on Friday afternoon, police say.

The principal was leading the eighth-grade graduation rehearsal at the Washington School gymnasium when the teen ran across the gym and stabbed the principal in the chest with a folding knife multiple times, according to Rutherford Police.

The teen then turned around, dropped the knife and put his hands in the air, according to police.

A teacher was able to take the knife away from the teen and take him outside, where officers took him into custody, police said.

Paramedics treated the principal for non-life-threatening injuries.

The eighth-grader, who was still in custody Friday evening, was charged with aggravated assault in the first and second degree, as well as weapons charges.
