NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An NYPD officer who pled guilty to assault and trespassing in Tennessee has resigned from the police force.
Michael Reynolds, 26, was visiting Nashville in July of 2018 when he kicked in the door of a home near the AirBnB where he was staying.
Reynolds went on to threaten violence against the home's resident, Conese Halliburton, and her four sons. Halliburton said that Reynolds, who is white, was intoxicated at the time and began using racial slurs against the family, who are black.
In September, Reynolds pled guilty to three counts of misdemeanor assault and one count of misdemeanor aggravated criminal trespassing. He was sentenced to 15 days in jail and three years' probation.
A statement from the NYPD said that Reynolds was due to begin an official disciplinary process in January. "Instead, he has quit the New York City Police Department effective immediately," Acting Deputy Commissioner for Public Information Devora Kaye said in the statement.
"He will receive no pension or health benefits, nor will he be allowed to carry a firearm. His actions are wholly inconsistent with the values and standards the New York City Police Department expects and demands of its officers."
An online petition calling for Reynolds to be fired gathered more than 12,000 signatures.
