NEW YORK (1010 WINS) New Jersey Congressman Jeff Van Drew has introduced a bill to crack down on irritating robocalls.

“Over the years, countless people throughout South Jersey have shared with me that they are constantly harassed by robocalls and scams,” said Representative Van Drew. “Robocall scams not only inconvenience us at the dinner table, but they prey on the vulnerable, including seniors, and it’s despicable. My bill will help protect consumers by ensuring that robocallers and scammers are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

The legislation would allow the FCC to pursue cases against robocall violations without first issuing a citation and increase the statute of limitation for the FCC to pursue spoofing and robocall violations against offenders.

New Jersey residents reported 321,393 robocall complaints in 2018, more than any other state.

A WSJ report found that the FCC attempted to collect $208 million from robocallers since 2015 but only managed to collect about $7,000.

“I don’t think there’s anything that can be done. They’re still going to get the number,” a New Jersey resident told 1010 WINS.
