TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Gov. Phil Murphy announced on Wednesday, that New Jersey will be pushing back its primary to July 7 from June 2 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

"Our democracy cannot be a casualty of #COVID19. We want to ensure that every voter can vote without endangering their health or safety," he tweeted.

New Jersey is among the worst-hit states in the country by the coronavirus with the coronavirus related fatalities surpassing 1,500.

Murphy specifically mentioned that he doesn't want to repeat what Wisconsin had with people having to choose between their right to vote and keeping healthy.

Earlier this week, he said the state is expected to approach the peak of the virus's curve sometime this month or next.

New Jersey has both mail-in and in-person voting.

Murphy says he'll sign the executive order Wednesday.
