NJ gov. reports 8 new cases of coronavirus, state total jumps to 23

NEWARK (1010 WINS) – Governor Phil Murphy on Wednesday, confirmed eight new cases of coronavirus overnight in New Jersey, bringing the state to a total of 23 cases.

Of the 23 coronavirus cases 20 are hospitalized and two are self-quarantined at home. 


New Jersey Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver announced the state's first coronavirus related death Tuesday afternoon.

The man was a 69-year-old Bergen County man with a history of illnesses including diabetes, atrial fibrillation and emphysema and suffered a cardiac arrest Tuesday morning, Oliver said. Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco says he was from the town of Little Ferry.

"We remain vigilant to doing all we can — across all levels of government — to protect the people of New Jersey," Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement on Twitter. 

On Monday, five new presumptive cases of cornavirus were announced in New Jersey.

On Sunday, a 70-year-old man from Teaneck was announced as one of the cases, according to State Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli, who said the man is a health care worker.

He was in stable condition at St. Joseph's Medical Center after being admitted to the hospital on March 6. 

The second case is a 32-year-old West New York man, Persichilli said.

He was hospitalized at Hackensack University Medical Center in Montclair after entering the hospital on March 5.

Officials haven't been able to talk to either to find out their contacts and exposure.

Health authorities said they are tracking 27 people.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced Friday night that the state had its fourth presumptive positive case of coronavirus.

"This evening, we identified a fourth presumptive positive case of #COVID19 in New Jersey," Murphy tweeted. "The individual, a male in his 50s, is hospitalized at @englewoodhosp in Bergen County. An extensive public health investigation is underway."

The individual has been hospitalized since March 5, Murphy's office said.

On Saturday, Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver said the man's case is connected to a cluster of cases in New Rochelle.

Oliver also said 15 more people are under investigation for the virus in New Jersey.
