MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Prosecutors on Thursday charged a New Jersey high school gym teacher for having sex with a student.

Gary Jiampetti, 43, a physical education teacher at Rancocas Valley Regional High School was charged with second-degree official misconduct and was taken into custody at his Berlin residence.

Officials received information that Jiampetti may have been involved in inappropriate behavior with female students.

An investigation confirmed that a consensual sexual relationship that occurred prior to the 2019-20 school year existed between Jiampetti and a student.

The student, who has since graduated, was not a minor at the time, prosecutors said.

Christopher Heilig, the Superintendent at Rancocas Valley Regional High School told parents and staff members in a letter on Thursday that Jiampetti is no longer allowed on the school's campus or at any related events, according to a report from the Burlington County Times.

"When our administration learned of distressing allegations made by former students involving this staff member, we immediately contacted the Mount Holly Police and Burlington County Prosecutor's Office to request a full and thorough investigation," Heilig said.
