NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey police officer charged with murder in the death of his estranged wife says he "blacked out" upon finding out his wife was with a boyfriend in her bedroom, according to a court affidavit acquired by WNBC.

The document says that Newark police Lt. John Formisano called the Jefferson home of his estranged wife, which whom he was going through divorce proceedings, around 11 p.m. on July 14.

He spoke with his wife, who Morris County officials identified as Christine Formisano.

She told her boyfriend, who was in the residence with her, that she saw a light, and realized her estranged husband was outside.

Christine Formisano left the house, locking the bedroom door behind her, and her boyfriend, identified as T.S., heard her say, "he's got a gun" and "call 911" before Formisano fired any shots.

Formisano, 49, proceeded to break down the bedroom door and repeatedly shoot the boyfriend in the thigh, abdomen, arms and hand.

Christine left her home and tried to get into a neighbor's home for help with her serious injuries.

Police discovered Formisano in a parking lot in Livingston with his car with a handgun in the trunk.

Formisano's two children, both under the age of 10, were in the residence when the shooting happened.

The Morris County Sheriff's Office said in a release that emergency personnel then went to the home to recover the children and the two victims.

The children were unharmed and the boyfriend was taken to Morristown  Medical Center Trauma Hospital with life-threatening injuries and is currently recovering.

Christine was discovered dead close by.

Formisano is a 24-year police veteran.

He's been charged with murder, attempted murder, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and weapon possession.

"The Newark Public Safety Department is deeply saddened by the family tragedy involving Newark Police Lt. John Formisano," Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said in a statement, "Our foremost concern, of course, is for the couple's two children who have lost their mother and for the family of the victim."
