NY state reports 5 COVID-19 deaths, keeps infection rate below 1%: Cuomo

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Five more people in New York state have died of complications related to COVID-19, but the state has kept its infection rate below 1 percent for 35 days straight, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday.

One of the five people who passed away died in the Bronx, one died in Erie County, one died in Queens, and two died in Suffolk County, bringing the state's death toll to 25,382, Cuomo said in a release.

Of the 89,722 COVID-19 test results that came back on Thursday, 880, or 0.98 percent, were positive, he said.

As of Thursday, 474 people in the state were hospitalized with COVID-19, 120 of whom were in intensive care units and 54 of whom were on ventilators.

"New York's ability to beat back COVID-19 and slow the spread depends on what we do," Cuomo said in a statement. "When informed citizens stay safe and play by the rules, 35 straight days with an infection rate below 1 percent is what you get."
