NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York state will extend its special enrollment period for health insurance for another 30 days due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday.
Uninsured New Yorkers will now be able to apply for health insurance via New York State of Health, the state’s insurance marketplace, through Sept. 15, Cuomo said in a release.
“While we’ve crushed the curve of the virus, we are still in challenging times for hard-working families throughout the state who need access to quality, affordable health care,” he said in a statement. “By offering this special enrollment period, we’re making sure New Yorkers who need affordable and at times life-saving health care coverage can get it."
New York state residents who have lost employer coverage must apply for health insurance within 60 days of losing their coverage, the release noted.
Residents who have lost income “may be eligible for Medicaid, the Essential Plan, Child Health Plus, or subsidized Qualified Health Plans,” the release added.
