NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- As Hurricane Dorian slowly spins its way up the East Coast, the city is preparing for the dangerous rip currents it will cause.

NYC beaches will be closed on Friday ands Saturday, the mayor's office announced.

"BREAKING: We’re expecting dangerous rip currents and 10 foot swells from Hurricane Dorian," read the tweet. "For New Yorkers' safety, we're CLOSING all city beaches to swimming and surfing starting Friday through Saturday, September 7th."

The beaches are slated to be open on Sunday, the last day of beach season.

"We implore New Yorkers to take the closures seriously and not to risk their safety by ignoring this directive and swimming and surfing while our shores are experiencing the impacts from Hurricane Dorian," NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver said in a statement.

Parks Department staffers and lifeguards will enforce the swimming and surfing ban along the city's coastline, officials said.

The city's 53 pools and 650 spray showers will remain open as usual Friday and Saturday.

NYC Ferry, which operates service between Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, warned customers on Thursday "to prepare for possible cancellations or delays" because of the weather.
