NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 34-man in Harlem was shot and wounded by NYPD officers late Tuesday afternoon, officials confirmed.
The shooting took place in a fourth-floor apartment on on West 114th Street shortly before 6 p.m., while officers were responding to a call of a man armed with a weapon.
The man, 34-year-old Michael Cordero, is in stable condition at St. Luke's-Roosvent Hospital Center.
NYPD Chief of Patrol Rodney Harriosn said, "Upon arrival, the offices encountered an eyewitness, who stated that there ws a man with a gun on the fourth floor hallway and provided a description. The officers proceeded to the fourth floor. Upon exiting the elevator, they encountered a male fitting that description."
Police say Cordero told the officers he had a gun -- and physically acted like he was holding up a gun -- did not respond to officer requests, and when he went into a shooting stance, an officer fired three times and wounded Cordero.
Instead, he was carrying a black leather bifold wallet. Coredero also possessed a silver knife.
NYPD chief of detectives Terrence Monaghan said officers acted appropriately.
One of the officers says "get your hand out of your pocket" and the suspect said "what the f*** do u mean. I have a gun," police said.
There were no other reported injuries, but at least one officer was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
An eyewitness told 1010 WINS that Cordero had no gun, "All I heard was shots."
The NYPD says body cam footage will show that Cordero claimed he had a gun.
Cordero's family says Cordero is schizophrenic but no danger to anyone and has retained lawyer Sanford Rubenstein.
