NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The NYPD released video Sunday that they say shows a man being shot with a taser after walking into a Brooklyn precinct stationhouse brandishing a long knife.
The NYPD tells 1010 WINS that the video shows the 26-year-old man at the entrance of the 75th Precinct stationhouse in East New York at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
NYPD Chief Terence Monahan said the man was emotionally disturbed and asking to be shot as he approached officers.
The man is seen holding a knife as officers surround him with their weapons drawn, the NYPD says.
Police ordered the man to drop the knife but he didn't comply, according to the NYPD.
An officer deploys a taser on the man and he collapses to the ground, the video shows. Officers quickly move in and take him into custody.
The NYPD says the man was taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition. He hadn't been charged as of Sunday afternoon.
"Cops face split second, life & death decisions every day," Monahan tweeted. "Though prepared for the worst, they delivered a safe outcome for everyone. Well done!"
The Sergeants Benevolent Association also tweeted the video, writing: "Man walks into Police Precinct and pulls a knife. Is the city really this far gone? Great job once again by NYPD Cops."
