CLARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Opening statements were scheduled for Tuesday, in the trial of the viral sensation known as 'Kai, the hatchet-wielding hitchhiker.'

His real name is Caleb McGillivary. He's 29-years-old.

He is accused of killing 73-year-old Joseph Galfy in 2013, about 2 hours after they met in Times Square. He was later arrested in Philadelphia and has been in jail ever since.

Police say a sexual encounter with Galfy turned violent. He was found beaten to death in his home in Clark, New Jersey.

McGillivary claimed, in a Facebook post, that he had been drugged and raped.

“What would you do if you woke up with a groggy head, metallic taste in your mouth, in a strangers house ... and started wretching, realizing that someone had drugged (and) raped ... you? what would you do?” he wrote.

In 2013, he became an internet celebrity when he told a local TV station in California that he saved two people while hitchiking in Fresno by smashing an attacker in the head with a hatchet.
