NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A person died after climbing under a UPS truck and getting dragged down a street in New Paltz on Thursday, according to police and a report.
Police officers responding to a 911 call around 3:54 p.m. on Thursday found the person dead on Main Street, between North Front Street and Springtown Road, the New Paltz Police Department said in a release.
Witnesses told police they saw a truck dragging the person down Main Street, the department said. The truck continued west on Route 299 after the incident, but was stopped on Libertyville Road, near 299, not long after, police said.
The Poughkeepsie Journal reported that the vehicle was a UPS truck.
A preliminary investigation found that the person climbed under the UPS truck while it was stopped in traffic, without the driver’s knowledge, the department said.
When the truck started moving, the person was caught underneath and got dragged down the street, according to the department.
The UPS driver fully cooperated with the investigation and hasn’t been charged in connection with the person’s death, police said. Police didn’t immediately release the name or age of the person who died.
In a statement provided to the Poughkeepsie Journal, UPS said it was “deeply saddened by this tragic loss,” adding that the company was “cooperating with authorities.”
“Any additional comments will be made by law enforcement while there remains an ongoing investigation,” UPS said.
