RUTHERFORD, N.J. (1010 WINS) – A plan to fly the LGBTQ pride flag over Rutherford Borough Hall has led to an online petition and flyers posted around town calling on leaders to cancel it.

Rutherford Pride is sponsoring the ceremony at Borough Hall on June 1, which is the beginning of Pride Month.

Rutherford Pride Chair Rob Lyons says the flyers have amplified support for LGBTQ residents, with many showing their support on the group's Facebook page.

“We are here as a group to help educate and maybe have the conversation – and it’s already sparked a conversation – to align an understanding of why this flag is so important to us,” Lyons said.

The online petition had drawn just over a dozen signatures as of Friday.

According to NorthJersey.com, the council unanimously voted to raise the flag back in April.

Resident Chris Moore told the council at the time that flying the flag may send a “bullying message” to institutions who don’t agree.

"Will a pro- or anti-abortion flag be permitted to fly? Will a pro or anti-euthanasia flag be flown? Will a marijuana leaf flag be flown? Will a traditional family values flag or marriage flag receive equal time?" Moore said.
