POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A small airplane crashed less than a mile from Hudson Valley Regional Airport in Dutchess County Friday afternoon, leaving one person with serious injuries.

Four passengers were on board the aircraft when it crashed, Colleen Pillus, communications director for the Dutchess County Executive's Office, told the Poughkeepsie Journal.  It was unclear if the four people include the pilot.

One person is believed to have serious injuries and "will likely have to be flown out," she said, and as of 4 p.m. the person has not been transported. A helicopter landed at the airport just after 4 p.m.

And two other passengers were "released and walked away from the scene, everything minor," and a fourth had a back injury and was transported on a stretcher, Pillus told the newspaper.

The plane, a Piper PA46, was on its final approach to the small airport around 2:30 p.m.

Pillus said the plane was low on fuel and planning to make an emergency landing at the airport. But, "just before they made their final approach they peeled off to the right and this is the result."

The FAA is investigating.
