NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — NYPD officers fatally shot an armed man who had fired at police early Friday morning, authorities said.
The incident took place at about 2:19 a.m. near 156th Street and 110th Avenue, according to officials.
The man fit the description of the suspect in a shooting at a nearby bodega less than an hour earlier, say authorities.
At about 1:45 a.m., officers responding to a report found a man, 26, with multiple gunshots to the torso in front of 107-35 Sutphin Boulevard, police say.
Police canvassing the area less than an hour later spotted someone who matched the description of the suspect.
After the man saw the officers, he fired several shots at their vehicle.
The officers got out of the car and fired at the suspect, striking the man in the head, according to officials.
The man was moved to Jamaica Hospital, where he died.
A 9mm handgun was found at the scene, authorities say.
No officers were injured, officials say.
NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said in a tweet, "In a tale of courage & professionalism that too often plays out overnight, @NYPD103Pct police officers searching for a suspected gunman saw the man sitting on a bench. As they approached, the man opened fire. The police returned fire, killing him. Our cops will thankfully be OK."
Police are investigating.
