Pro-police boaters say Labor Day weekend flotilla in NJ could break record

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Organizers planning a pro-police, pro-veteran parade of boats along the Jersey Shore this Labor Day weekend believe the event could set a new world record.

Organizer Chris Molla told the New York Post that some 2,000 to 2,500 boats could set sail on Saturday.

"I would say it's going to be a 10-mile span of boats," Molla said.

The flotilla will launch in the Barnegat Bay, near the mouth of the Toms River, around 10 a.m. before the boats spread out north and south along the Shore. Hundreds more vessels are expected to join them after that.

The event is expected to draw many supporters of President Donald Trump, with similar boating events held for Trump across the U.S. over the summer, including in New York City. But Molla said supporters of Democratic nominee Joe Biden are welcome as well.

"It really isn't boaters for Trump; it's boaters for law enforcement and veterans. Trump just happens to support both of them," he told the Post. "Boaters tend to be a pretty happy crowd. We're out there to have a good time. There's no hatred or animosity towards anyone."

According to the Post, the Guinness World Record for the largest boat parade was in Malaysia in 2014, with 1,180 boats.

Organizers said they contacted Guinness to see if a representative could come validate Saturday's number but haven't heard back yet.
