Proposed UWS bike lane would eliminate 400 parking spaces

Central Park West

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) A new bike lane on Central Park West would cost the street 400 parking spaces if it moves forward as proposed.

The plan will go in front of Community Board 7, which covers the neighborhood, in its full board meeting on Tuesday night.

The Community Board's transportation committee approved of the proposal, which would create a protected northbound bike lane on Central Park West, unanimously.

The plan, offered by the Department of Transportation is intended to make the street safer for cyclists and pedestrians, with designated turn lanes designed to reduce weaving.

The push for a protected bike lane intensified after an Australian tourist, Madison Lyden, was killed while riding her bike on Aug. 10, 2018.

The Department of Transportation additionally found 22 people had been severely injured on the block from 2013 to 2017.

The Community Board's role is purely advisory.
