NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- There were shark sightings in Long Beach and Jones Beach Tuesday afternoon -- one day after two other shark sightings on Long Island -- prompting the closure of beaches there, officials said.
"At 3pm, a shark was spotted at Jones Beach Field 6 – 5 miles from the County’s Nickerson Beach," County Executive Laura Curran. "We've temporarily closed Nickerson for swimming & to additional visitors. We'll reassess in 1 hour. @NassauCountyPD's air patrol is on alert & will continue to monitor the coast."
And around the same time, the City of Long Beach tweeted, "Ocean Update: There has been another shark sighting. The ocean is closed until further notice. We will update as more information becomes available."

On Monday, a lifeguard spotted a shark near West Lido Beach in Hempstead. There was another sighting later in the afternoon.
The Town of Hempstead temporarily prohibited swimming at its beaches, but eventually lifted that order, and permitted beachgoers to enter the water up to their knees. Long Beach shut down its beaches altogether.
Also on Monday, the woman killed in an apparent shark attack in the waters off the coast of Maine -- within hours of two shark sightings off the coast of Long Island -- has been identified as New York City resident Julie Dimperio Holowach, 63.
The Maine Marine Patrol said in a statement Monday it is "investigating the fatality of a woman today near Bailey Island. According to Marine Patrol, an eyewitness reported that the woman was swimming off the shore near White Sails Lane when she was injured in what appeared to be a shark attack. Kayakers nearby brought her to shore and EMS responders were called to the scene where she was pronounced deceased."
The statement added that "swimmers and boaters are urged to use caution near Bailey Island and to avoid swimming near schooling fish or seals."
The identity of the woman is being withheld pending notification of family and the investigation remains ongoing.
