NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Nearly 400 people showed up at a public hearing to protest a proposed new homeless shelter on Staten Island.

The Staaten catering hall was packed with lines out the door as people showed their opposition to a planned shelter to be built on Victory Boulevard in West Brighton on Staten Island's north shore.

The shelter would hold 200 families.

The shelter would be run by WIN, a nonprofit headed by former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who spoke at the hearing.

Protesters said that the shelter was both too big and in the wrong location.

"The topic is 44 Victory Boulevard," one protester said," It's the wrong site and it's too big. That's the topic."

Opponents said they planned to sue the city to stop construction.
