NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Reserachers from Mount Sinai in a new study say for the first time they have found a link between 9/11 first responders exposed to toxic dust and an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.
Co-author William Oh says the mechanism by which exposure might increase the risk of prostate cancer hadn't previously been shown.
According to the most recent date from the World Trade Center health program, prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among responders.
Non-melanoma skin cancer is first.
The research was published in the journal of Molecular Cancer Research.
