NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Why would someone think it's okay to spit on a subway conductor?

Tony Utano, of the Transport Workers Union, said the conductor on a 6 train was repeatedly spat on, Friday morning at the Bleecker Street station.
"This is a disgusting, despicable, really outrageous thing that's happening to our conductors. They're getting spit on, they're getting bottles thrown at them. No other title in New York City has to deal with this stuff," he said.
The woman was spit on at least twice when she opened her conductor door. It apparently happened after she told a rider to put a cigarette out.
The incident caused delays and the train was removed from service.
Utano is calling for more police to patrol the platforms, and says the spitter belongs in jail.
So far there have been no arrests.
