Riders rage over proposed MTA fare hike: 'It's getting worse'

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The MTA board is set to vote this Thursday on the first fare and toll hike since 2017.

What do riders think about that? 1010 WINS’ John Montone took to the subway to find out.

An F train rider from the Lower East Side fired an F-bomb to describe his subway service and his displeasure with the fare hike.

While David from Brooklyn said he can’t count on the number 6 train.

“The train is always breaking down. It’s always late,” he said. “Right now I should be on a train going Uptown and there’s no train right now.”

One of the MTA fare hike proposals would raise the weekly MetroCard from $30 to $31.

“That’s too much,” David said.

One woman got straight to the point as she raced up some subway stairs: "It sucks!"

Meanwhile, the L train might as well stand for “late,” because one rider says it still hadn’t shown up Tuesday morning. He said by the time he finally arrives at the G for a transfer, that train will be gone too.

And Ernie says he can’t count on the number 4.

“I’m furious because I ride the train every single day,” he said. “We pay up because we need to get to work.”

Elaine also rides the 4 train. She says the MTA is getting worse and worse.

“Always with delays and many different issues,” she said.

It’s not all nays for the MTA and its proposed fare hike. A rider from the Lower East Side who gave his name as “Johnny Jazz” says he takes every subway line in the city and he loves them all.
