NEW YORK (1010 WINS/AP) -- On the final day before a long summer break, two major issues await the Supreme Court's decision.
The census case involved an attempt by the Trump administration to ask everyone about their citizenship status in the 2020 census.
The Supreme Court ruled to block Trump's bid to add the citizenship question citing that the administration's explanation was insufficient.
The court says the Trump administration's explanation for wanting the question added was "more of a distraction'' than an explanation.
With census forms set to be printed beginning next week, there is no word yet on whether the administration would have time to provide a more thorough account. The court ruled 5-4 on Thursday, with Chief Justice John Roberts joining the four liberals in the relevant part of the outcome.A lower court found the administration violated federal law in the way it tried to add a question asking about citizenship. The last time the question was broadly asked was in 1950.
Census Bureau experts have projected that millions of Hispanics and immigrants would go uncounted if the census asked for citizen status. The justices took the bench at 10 a.m. on Thursday with five cases which remain unresolved.
The others include control of a large portion of eastern Oklahoma that once belonged to Indian tribes and the rights of unconscious, suspected drunken drivers.
