Suspect in custody after Newark hit-and-run seriously injures girl

Newark hit and run
1010 WINS

NEWARK (1010 WINS) – Police in Newark have a driver in custody who they believe left the scene of a crash that seriously injured a young girl.

The 2-year-old was struck at Brookdale and 18th avenues shortly before 9:45 a.m. Sunday, according to police.

The girl's father, Jameson, told 1010 WINS that it all started with a mix-up: he was going to a church across the street with his daughter when the little girl ran ahead of him. He thought she had caught up to her mother, who was already at the church, while the girl's mother thought the 2-year-old was with her father.

It turns out little Enna was in the road all by herself.

Surveillance footage obtained by 1010 WINS shows her lying motionless in the street after a light-colored pickup truck passes by.

The girl was found conscious but seriously injured and rushed to University Hospital.

Jameson says the anguishing mistake is eased only by the girl's positive prognosis -- she has a broken rib and punctured lung but is expected to survive.

"I felt sad, I felt like crying. But when I saw her open her eyes I felt better," he said.

Police said a Chevy Silverado pickup truck was found at the scene without a driver.

The suspected driver was eventually taken into custody, according to police. He or she has not been identified.
