Tap-based OMNY to replace MetroCard

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The MetroCard begins its journey out this weekend, as the OMNY, a tap-based system, will come into use at 16 stations, en route to eventually fulling replacing the iconic blue-and-yellow card.

OMNY stands for "One Metro New York" and will allow New Yorkers to use a card, or their phone or bank card to tap to pay for their subway and bus fare.


The OMNY will be operational on Friday on 16 stations on the 4, 5, and 6 lines between Grand Central - 42nd Street and Atlantic Avenue - Barclays Center and on Staten Island buses.

OMNY will be available at every subway station by the end of 2020 but MetroCard won't be fully phased out until 2023..

OMNY could allow for such innovcations as all-door payment on buses and universal payment for all MTA systems.
