Couch in Upper West Side tree fascinates, frightens New Yorkers

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – New Yorkers are accustomed to seeing bizarre things, but here's a first: a brown, wicker couch perched in a tree on the Upper West Side.

It's unclear how it got there, but it took firefighters to lug the hulking piece of furniture down 30 feet from the tree at Amsterdam and West 95th Street.

"I try to figure out how it get all the way up there," maintenance man Caesar told 1010 WINS' John Montone Tuesday morning.

Asked if he'd ever seen a couch in a tree, Caesar responded: "First time in my life. It's crazy."

Caesar was afraid the soaring sofa might fall on him and he breathed a sigh of relief when crews dragged it away.

"No more couch in the tree. We are safe," he said.

The most notorious brown wicker couch in all of New York City is on its final somber journey to a landfill Tuesday after being crushed by a sanitation truck.

But its lore may live on, as one Upper West Side resident observed: "I kind of feel like – there are sneakers that go over wires – that's our version here on the Upper West Side."

Godspeed, brown wicker couch.
