NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The Health Department has released its list of the most popular New York City baby names of 2018.
Emma was the top girl name in 2018, while Liam was the top boy name that year.
Liam continues to be parents’ top pick for boys; it has reigned atop the baby boy name list since 2016.
Emma has been the most popular name for baby girls since 2017.
Approximately 779 Liams and 501 Emmas were born in 2018, the most recent year recorded by the Health Department. The 2019 names won’t be released until December 2020.
Eight of the top 10 girl names from 2017 stayed on the list in 2018; Emily dropped off the top 10 list, while Amelia and Chloe were added.
Nine of the top 10 boy names from 2017 stayed on the list in 2018; Jayden dropped off the top 10 list, while Alexander was added.
Some New Yorkers opted for rarer names: There were a handful of girls named Aminah, Ida and Zadie and boys called Bentley, Lucian and Warren.

The number of babies born in the city decreased 2.3 percent from 2017 to 2018: 117,013 births compared to 114,296.
There were more boys born in 2018 than girls: 58,442 boys compared to 55,854 girls.
Manhattan saw more births than any other borough:
Manhattan: 43,945
Brooklyn: 28,270
Queens: 23,963
The Bronx: 13,452
Staten Island: 5,666
