National Weather Service confirms tornado hit NJ

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) —The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado descended upon Stanhope, New Jersey Tuesday night.

A tornado warning was also issued for Staten Island, though no twisters actually hit.


Several thousand customers are still without power in New Jersey.

The areas airport, JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty all saw delays of three hours or more.

Rosemary Maio, mayor of Stanhope, said, "It was raining so hard that you could barely see. There are a lot of trees down, wires down."

Lenape Valley Regional High School in Stanhope will be closed today due to the weather.
