NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Transit riders and advocates gathered on the northeast corner on 14th Street and 1st Avenue in Manhattan to defend the 14th Street busway plan.

The plan to ban cars on 14th Street so buses can pick up their speed was supposed to begin on Monday, but was delayed due to a last minute restraining order.

The press conference even started about 20 minutes late because some of the attendants got stuck on the L train.

"I got off that L train and decided to walk because i knew it was faster, said Tom from Transit Alternative. "The entire time when I was walking to here from Union Square I was in front of a bus."

"This is the kind of service that 27,000 New Yorkers are having to deal with every single day." he added.

The busway plan, which was first announced in April was designed to alleviate some of the effects the L train shutdown would have and help commuters get crosstown but advocates insist there is not point in having extra buses, if they can't move.
